What is an after-hours lockout?
- Residential: you can't get into your house or apartment.
- Automotive: you can't get into your car or trunk.
- Commercial: you can't open your office or shop.
Evaluating the situation
On arrival the locksmith checks a few things before touching the lock:
- What type of lock is involved?
- Is the key lost, or locked inside?
- Is there visible damage to the lock or door?
- Is there an emergency, such as a child or pet inside?
Non-destructive entry comes first
Most residential and automotive locks can be opened by picking, bypass tools or specialist entry kits. Drilling is a last resort for high-security or damaged locks, and the locksmith should explain the cost before going ahead.
Rekeying or replacing afterward
If your keys were lost or stolen, opening the door is only half the job. Rekeying makes the old keys useless and is usually cheaper than buying new locks. If the lock is worn or was damaged, replacing it may make more sense.
How to prepare for the unexpected
- Save a local locksmith's number in your phone.
- Keep a spare key with someone you trust.
- Consider a keypad or smart lock with a physical key backup.
- Check the price list now so you know what to expect.
