Why superlatives are just taglines
Superlatives in an advert aren't backed by any standard. They tell you nothing about pricing, skill or honesty. Judge a locksmith by how they behave on the phone and at your door.
Signs of a trustworthy locksmith
- Clear pricing: a stated service call fee and labor estimate before work starts.
- Identity checks: they ask for proof that you own or live at the property.
- Professional conduct: they arrive identifiable, respect your property and explain costs.
- No pressure: they don't push upgrades you don't need.
- Written invoice: itemized parts and labor at the end.
Licensing and insurance in California
California requires locksmith companies and individual locksmiths to be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Ask for the license number and check it on the state's online license lookup. It's also reasonable to ask whether the locksmith carries liability insurance.
Rely on reviews, not self-praise
- Verified reviews on independent sites
- Recommendations from neighbors and friends
- Local businesses that use the same locksmith
Red flags
- A very low phone quote that jumps once the locksmith arrives
- Insisting on drilling a standard lock right away
- No ID check before opening a door
- Cash-only payment with no invoice
