Common causes of car lockouts
- Keys left in the ignition, the trunk or on the seat
- A fob with a dead battery
- A key broken off in the door lock
- Lost keys, especially in parking lots and at the airport
Why DIY techniques are not recommended
Slim jims and wires can scratch paint, tear weatherstripping or disconnect the linkage inside the door. On cars with side-impact airbags, poking around the door cavity is a safety risk. A repair can easily cost more than a locksmith visit.
How a professional opens the car
Automotive locksmiths use purpose-made tools such as air wedges and long-reach tools that work from the door's edge, or lock-specific picks. The aim is to open the car without leaving a mark. Expect to show ID and proof of ownership before the car is opened.
When the key is gone
If you've lost the key entirely, a locksmith can often cut a new one to the lock and program a transponder chip on site. That is usually quicker than ordering one from a dealer. See our automotive locksmith service.
When to call a locksmith
Call when the keys are locked inside, lost, broken in the lock or when the fob won't respond after a battery change. If a child or pet is inside a hot car, call 911 first.
