What is a deadbolt lock?
A deadbolt is a lock with a bolt that isn't spring-loaded. Once thrown, it can't be pushed back by sliding a card or prying the latch. It usually sits above the doorknob and extends about an inch into the door frame.
Single vs. double cylinder
- Single cylinder: key outside, thumb turn inside. The most common choice for homes.
- Double cylinder: key on both sides. Useful next to glass, but check local fire codes, since you need a key to get out.
- Keypad deadbolts: a code instead of a key, often with a key backup.
Understanding ANSI grades
ANSI grades locks from 1 to 3. Grade 1 has passed the toughest strength and durability tests and suits exterior doors. Grade 2 is common for residential entries. Grade 3 is basic.
Installation details that matter
A deadbolt is only as strong as the frame it locks into. Long screws in the strike plate that reach the wall stud make a big difference against kicks. A locksmith can install the lock and reinforce the strike in one visit.
