What does it mean to rekey a lock?
Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock cylinder so it works with a new key. The old keys stop working, but the lock itself stays on the door. When done by a professional, it's as effective as a new lock for key control and costs less.
1. You don't know who else has a key
Unless you're the first occupant, copies may be held by:
- Real estate agents
- Former owners or tenants
- Their friends and family
- Cleaning or repair crews
- Former roommates, pet sitters or babysitters
Even if every key was “collected,” there's no way to know whether one was copied.
2. It's quick and affordable
Rekeying is usually cheaper than replacing every lock. A locksmith can rekey several doors in one visit, and the rekey coupon covers a fifth lock free when you rekey four. You can also ask for all your locks to use the same key.
3. Peace of mind for your family
Your home should feel like yours. Knowing that only the people you chose have keys is worth the small cost.
Rekey or replace?
Rekey if the locks are in good condition and a decent grade. Replace them if they're worn, damaged, or you want a higher-security or keypad lock. See our residential locksmith services.
